Sketch book: Writing on the Wall.

Sometimes, the ideas come from a song.  This is from The Dear Hunter, Act III: The Life and Death.  Specifically the first track from the album; The Writing on the Wall.  It's the opening line from a song about the trenches in WW1.  

I think my sculpture idea is appropriate for the feel of the line...

I was working from descriptions, notes and some rough (very rough) sketches from Dr. Petran.  Although the portraiture here is more or less spot on (as far as human anatomy goes).

Somewhere along the line I thought a clockwork/alchemystic automaton with the plague mask for a head was a really keen idea.  In any drawings of it, it's usually speaking in symbols...
